A message from Marcie Feldman...

what inspires me is rarely seen in traditional galleries or art museums. one of the most exciting settings I frequent for inspiration is the Visionary Museum of Art in Baltimore, for it displays a range of "outsider art" that entices me due to its direct intent and raw visual power.

what, in my opinion, makes good art?  that which comes from deep within the subconscious; art that isn't pretentious, that deliberately defies standards or "labels", and stirs emotive, visceral reactions.

what are the sources that contribute to one’s visual "iconography"? images layered from memories, having lived in other countries and experienced other cultures, the mysterious workings of the mind, and a “dreaming awake” consciousness which allows for time and logic to dissolve.

having a child's lack of fear and an accompanying joy in experiencing "the new" is a gift we can only hope to touch on. unfortunately, children are taught that their intuitive sensibilities and natural sense of play should  be "replaced" by conformity.

yet, it is that which lies OUTSIDE of rigidity and programmed reactions that is magical. logic, if applied, must be personal - not rigid...it should be a vast dreamscape  of narratives, that when given form through artistic expression, touch the soul and remind us that the best parts of life are neither planned nor expected.

redline

keeping the soul open to "happy accidents" and synchronicity elicit expression through an intense need to tell a story, write a color “tone poem”, make us laugh, reflect, marvel. and what part does the viewer take?

he or she need not "understand" what drives the artist. hopefully, viewers might come away with a feeling that they've experienced a "new place", one which will resonate in their own subconscious. color and form take us from the sidewalk to the sky, and open our eyes to the endless sources which feed the artist's voice.
